Ms. Rankin's
6th Grade Homework

October 11 - 15

Monday
We discussed the differences between a map and a globe.  Each group of students was given a map on which they placed stickers to mark the locations of various catastrophic events.
Tuesday
The pink review sheets were stamped as completed or not.  They were corrected in class and the rest of the period was spent reviewing for the metrics test which is tomorrow.
Wednesday
Test on metric system and the scientific method.
Thursday
We will continue our work on catastrophic events by answering questions on the worksheet that was begun last Friday.
Friday
Paper Towel Labs are to be turned in today.  I will be gone to a workshop.  Today students will work on building a tower with one sheet of copy paper and 30 centimeters of masking tape. This project will be revisited next week when students will be graded on how high their tower is.
Long term assignments
The paper towel labs are due this Friday.

October 4 - 8

Monday
We again worked on the paper towel lab.
Tuesday
Last day to do experimentation for the paper towel lab.
Wednesday
We will be doing as much of the rough draft of the paper towel as we have time for in class today.
Pink review sheets for the upcoming test on metrics and the scientific method went home today.
Thursday
We begin our major unit for the year, Catastrophic Events.  We defined the terms catastrophe and castastrophic event and brainstormed an extensive list of examples.
Friday
Students received their mid-trimester grades today.  They are due back on Tuesday signed by an adult in the household.
During class each student constructed a concept map of what they already know about catastrophic events.  They then got together to develop group concept maps to pool the knowledge of 4 or five students at a time.
Long term projects
Next Wednesday, October 13 is the test on metrics and the scientific method.  It will be worth about 40 points.  There will be a review session during class on Tuesday.  Students are also welcome to come early on Tuesday to get help.
Next Friday, October 16, the paper towel lab write up is due.  It is worth 50 points.

September 27 - October 1

Monday
We began a lab which has the students chosing a variable and controlling other variable in an experiment with floating cups and pennies as cargo.
Tuesday
All students worked the floating cups lab. If it was not completed in class, it is homework that is due tomorrow.
Wednesday
Our large lab on the scientific method was begun today.  It is the paper towel lab.  We walked through doing the title and statement of purpose.  After making preliminary observations of the three brands of paper towels, students wrote hypotheses.
Thursday
The classes worked on setting up the procedure for their first experiment with the paper towel and began to work.
Friday
During this short day students continued working on the paper towel lab experiment.
Long Term Assignments
The paper towel lab final draft will be done at home and turned in in about ten days from now.

September 20-24

Monday
One more lab on measuring volume and mass with the added twist of making different colored saltwater solutions which were then floated one on top of the other.
Tuesday
Did a worksheet where we consolidated all the information on the metric system.
Wednesday
Began working on the "Scientific Method" with a lab on observation and inferences.
Thursday
Continued the lab on observation and inferences.
Friday
Finished the lab on observations and inferences.  Began talking about the next lab "Floating with the scientific Method".  This lab deals with controlling variables.
Long Range Assignments

September 13-17

Monday
The "Big Bird" lab on drawing a line graph was done.
Tuesday
Worked on a lab measuring mass with the metric system using triple beam balances.
Wednesday
Did another mass lab, this time finding the mass of water and different powders.
Thursday
Began to work with volume in the metric system doing a lab with colored water.
Friday
Did a lab where the students found the volume of various containers and the volume of solid objects using the displacement of water within a graduated cylinder.
Long Range Assignments

September 6-10

Monday

Tuesday
We organized twelve o'clock buddies.
The elements of a bar graph were discussed and the "Gummi Worm Lab" was done.

Long Range Assignements

August 30 - September 3
Monday
Welcome to Hillview!  We will be doing seating charts, name sticks and a game "People Search" to get us started.
Tuesday
Today we went over the blue expectations sheet which is to be taken home and signed by a parent.  We also completed a room search.
Wednesday
We are beginning the metric system.  Students drew "Aliens" with specific measurements.  Unfinished drawings are to be completed as homework.
Thursday
Students traded their alien drawings and measured the lengths of someone else's drawing.
We discussed the units of length in the metric system.
Friday
Students did a metric scavenger hunt within the classroom looking for various lengths.
