MY FAVORITE NEW THING
My wife, who knows me all too well, knows that I love stories about human survival.
One of my heroes is Les Stroud, a survival instructor, who, among other things, just wrote a book I cannot put down. It’s called Survive, and although it’s not a “story”, it is a riveting exposition about ways to make fire, find water, catch fish and game, and keep your head about you in a tight spot. As an avid backpacker, it’s always good to know you can rely on yourself in the absence of civilization - which we all need a break from now and again.
In two weeks, some friends and I venture on our 13th annual snowshoe trip. Three days of snowshoeing, day treks, navigation via compass, and freezing our behinds off - what a great way to spend a long weekend.
Hopefully, I won’t have to use any of the skills I’m reading about. The idea of catching and eating a squirrel might seem interesting, but in reality, I’d rather enjoy smoked salmon smothered in brie.
