Meet Ms. Willard

Science is my favorite subject! I've been teaching since 2000 and love working with middle schoolers. My favorite parts of science are ecology, geology and chemistry. I especially like volcanoes, earthquakes, and anything that runs, slithers, or crawls.

Before I became a teacher I was a naturalist at Outdoor Ed, where most of you have been! I also worked as an instructor leading wilderness trips with Outward Bound in Zimbabwe, Africa. For a few years I taught science at the Randall Museum in San Francisco, and also worked as an environmental consultant in Half Moon Bay with Essex Environmental. I've also led bicycling, backpacking, and canoeing trips for high school kids at Merrowvista Education Center in New England. As you can tell, I love nature!

I grew up in Redwood City and went to McKinley Middle School, then on to Sequoia High School. I went to Stanford for college where I studied Human Biology with an emphasis in environmental studies. While there I studied in Ecuador, and was able to go to the Galapagos Islands and learn Spanish. I went to graduate school in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where I studied environmental education.

When I'm not teaching I love to travel, especially by bicycle. I have ridden my bike from Vancouver, Canada, to Santa Barbara, California. I've also ridden across northern Europe, India, and Burma. I like to swim (in the mornings, before school!) bicycle, play guitar, do yoga, and snow ski.
