Do you accept late work?
Completing and turning in all work on time is very important and a fact of life. I set due dates for a reason and expect students to stick to those deadlines. If a student does not turn in an assignment on time, the assignment will be marked late and receive a grade no higher than a "C".
I understand, however, there are emergencies. If an emergency arises, parents can write me a short note. In most cases, students will still be expected to turn in the work but it will not be considered late.

What if I'm absent?
If you are absent, a homework buddy will collect your assignments and fill out a "We Missed You!" sheet. For each day you were out, you have an extra day to make up and hand in the work. For example, if you were sick Tuesday, and returned Wednesday, then the assignments from Tuesday and Wednesday are due on Thursday. Please make sure to attach the "We Missed You!" sheet to the assignments when you turn them in. If you were out several days and need more time, please talk to your teacher.

Do we have homework everyday?
Sixth grade has an average of 1 hour, 40 minutes of homework each school night. Please remember this is an average, and students work at different paces.
Since Core takes about nearly half your day, Core homework will take up about one hour each night, some of that time is reading silently. Time is usually scheduled in class to begin homework, so students know what the assignment is and can ask questions before leaving.

What supplies do I need to survive sixth grade?
- 3-inch binder (please, no cloth, zipper, or Velcro – too heavy!) for all 6 th grade subjects
- 10 blank tabbed binder dividers
- binder paper: 500-sheet pack (Keep ~30-50 sheets in your binder, to be replenished weekly.)
- pencil pouch to hold the following:
- glue stick
- 3” x 5” index cards ( at least 200, lined) It's nice to have either a box, small binder, or metal ring to hold them, too.
- highlighter, any color
- color pencils, 12-pack is great
- Crayola 8 count markers (fine tip, regular colors)
- two blue or black ballpoint pens and one easily visible correcting pen of any other color
- 2-3 sharpened pencils (or mechanical with extra lead )
- hand held pencil sharpener that “catches” the shavings (unless using mechanical pencils)

How can I earn extra credit?
Throughout the trimester, I offer opportunities to earn extra credit. Usually extra credit opportunities are an extension of an assignment for an extra two to five points.

My backpack is really heavy-- any suggestions?
I have a few suggestions:
Students should regularly clean and organize their binder to rid excess weight. We encourage students to keep folders or a small box at home to keep graded papers. It is important to keep the papers until the end of the year "just in case". Occasionally there may be a grade discrepancy that can be clarified with a graded paper.
Also, I recommend that students regularly use their locker/cubby so as to not carry excess weight. Developing a schedule to visit the locker (before school, recess, lunch, after school) will help students recognize what is necessary to carry in their backpack. I regularly use the Social Studies book in class, but only occasionally require students to use the book at home. Therefore, students should not be carrying their Social Studies book back and forth to school. Parents can also purchase textbooks so students have a copy of the book at home and at school.
